March 4, 2023: Tricia Velure and Tom Sandhei, Reading from Dust Yourself Off: The Gravel Road to a Good Life. Tricia and Tom’s book is the true story of a farm woman in 1940s/50s North Dakota who recovered from a series of shocks and tragedies–and the surprising ways in which she did that. “This project began because I wanted my kids and grandkids to know their grandmother,” said the book’s co-author Tom Sandhei of his mother, Muriel. “She was a remarkable woman.” After Sandhei took the story as far as he could on his own, he teamed up with Tricia Velure, a personal historian and writer from the neighboring town. “Tom and I unknowingly grew up on farms less than 20 minutes from each other in North Dakota, 30 years apart,” said Velure. “Decades later, we met in the Twin Cities, where we lived 10 minutes apart. We were meant to meet and write this story together!” Tricia and Tom will be reading from and talking about their writing of Dust Yourself Off in Fort Ransom is on Friday, March 4, 2023.

 

 

 

 

 

March 3, 2023: Morning-After Fill Up. Free and open to the public, our Morning-After Fill Up features authors Matt Ehlman and Antonia Gonzales at the Plains Art Museum. Bright and early, 7:00 a.m., we’ll have coffee and light refreshments and an interview with Antonia Gonzales, host and producer of National Native News. Matt and Antonia will conduct an interview based on the model of The Morning Fill Up, a monthly event with open dialogues and exchanges of ideas that takes place in the historic building, The Garage, a restored and repurposed co-working space in Rapid City, SD. Antonia is one of the past guests of The Morning Fill Up, and she and Matt are contributors to NDSU Press’s 2023 anthology publication, Rethinking Rural: Reflections on Today, Insights for the Future, which is Volume 1 of our new Rethinking Rural Series. 

   

 

March 2, 2023: 8th Annual NDSU Press Party. Free and open to the public, this event celebrates the books and authors of our most recent publications. October 1, 2022: Paul Legler, author of Half the Terrible Things, will take part in the Deep Valley Book Festival in Mankato, MN. This free-admission-free-parking event is an opportunity to meet authors and win prizes. The first 100 adult attendees will receive free festival tote bags. Author visits will take place between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., followed at 3:30 by this year’s featured author, Curtis Sittenfeld. Be sure to say hi to Paul!

August 24, 2022: Author of Stringing Rosaries and His Feathers Were Chains, Denise Lajimodiere will be reading and signing Stringing Rosaries and her new children’s book with Minnesota Historical Society Press, Josie Dances. The event is August 24 and runs from 5 to 7 pm at Main Street Books in Minot, ND.

June 25, 2022: The Midwest Independent Publishers Association will be awarding the Midwest Book Awards at

ModernWell in Minneapolis. There will be a ticketed reception from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

 

The award ceremony will be livestreamed on YouTube at 7 pm. Of our 2021 publications Wayne Gudmundson’s A Song for Liv, Don Weinell’s A Field Guid to Custer’s Camps, Bonnie Larson Staiger’s In Plains Sight, Mark Vinz’s The Trouble with Daydreams, and Prakash Mathew’s We Are Called . . . April 30, 2022: Independent Book Sellers Day will be celebrated locally at Zanbroz Variety at 420 Broadway N in Fargo. NDSU Press authors Jill Kandel, Denise Lajimodiere, and W. Scott Olsen will be signing books.

 

April 23, 2022: NDSU Press will be selling books at World Book at Broadway Square in Fargo. NDSU Press authors Prakash Mathew, W. Scott Olsen, and translator John K. Cox will be reading from their works. The event begins at 2 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

 

September 26, 2021: Bonnie Larson Staiger, author of recently published poetry collection, In Plains Sight, will be doing a poetry reading in Bismarck, North Dakota at the Capital Gallery on Sunday, September 26 at 1:00 p.m. The event is free and will include a book signing.

 

September 16, 2021: Wayne Gudmundson, author and photographer of A Song for Liv, will be doing a book reading and photography showing at Zandbroz Variety in downtown Fargo, North Dakota on Thursday, September 16 at 6:30 p.m. Anyone interested in film photography, a sense of place, and Icelandic settlement in North Dakota and Minnesota, is encouraged to attend. Admission is free, and face masks are required.

September 10, 2021 – October 11, 2021: Wayne Gudmundson’s new exhibition, White Earth Window / What Place is This? will be on display in the main and east galleries at the Rourke Art Gallery + Museum in Moorhead, Minnesota. The public opening is Sunday, September 12 at 1:30 p.m. The exhibition features photographs from the White Earth Ojibwe Reservation in Minnesota and silver gelatin prints of historic battlefields in the American southwest with companying writing from Dieter Berninger. NDSU Press recently published Gudmundson’s newest photography collection, A Song for Liv, which traces his family’s Icelandic heritage through image and verse.

September 12, 2021: Exciting news! Our newest authors, Debra Marquart and Mark Vinz, are part of a trilogy of terrific writers–including Pulitzer Prize winner Louise Erdrich–from the northern plains. Jamie Parsley on Prairie Public’s “Main Street, today at 3:00 p.m. Here is a link to the recording of that session, in which Jamie talks about researching and writing Fargo, 1957: An Elegy, his long-ago poetry/photography book that we brought back into print this summer.

August 7, 2021: Author Don Weinell will be signing books at Zandbroz Variety, downtown Fargo, from 1-3:00 p.m. Come by and chat him up! He’s ready to share stories and tips about hiking, biking, and driving the route as described in his Field Guide to Custer’s Camps: On the March to the Little Bighorn. With color maps and photos, this book is an easy-to-use guide to understanding the route followed by George Armstrong Custer and his troops as they marched to their most famous battle. Maps, driving directions, and brief descriptions of each campsite allow the most casual travelers, the more serious hikers, bikers, historians, and history buffs to better appreciate the challenges faced by US soldiers serving on the northern plains in 1876.

June 20, 2021: In commemoration of the 1957 F5 tornado anniversary, the city of Fargo will be hosting the Fargo Tornado Anniversary Activation from  from 5-9 p.m. CST at Broadway Square in downtown Fargo. The NDSU Press is reprinting the 2010 collection piece Fargo, 1957: An Elegy, by Jamie Parsley. Parsley, a survivor of the tornado, will be reading from Fargo, 1957: An Elegy as one of the signature presentations of this event. To find more details about the involvement of the NDSU Press and Parsley with the Fargo Tornado Anniversary Activation, click here. Family and friends will read from the late Timothy Murphy’s newest collection of poetry. Family from across the United States—including Tim’s mom—will read poems from Hiking All Night. Tim’s friends Aaron Poochigian, Howard Dahl, and Steve Syrdal will read, too.

January 19, 2020: The State Historical Society of North Dakota, 612 East Boulevard Ave. Bismarck, ND, will be hosting a free lecture by authors K. Amy Phillips and Steven R. Bolduc based off their book The Prairie Post Office. The presentation will include a brief history of mail delivery in Dakota Territory and highlight the critical roles of post offices in contemporary rural North Dakota communities. This event is part of the SHSND Sensational Sundays events and starts at 2 pm.

September 10, 2019: The St. Louis Park Historical Society will host a reading by Rebecca Bender, author of Still, at the Society’s Annual Meeting. As there are so many St. Louis Park and Twin Cities connections in Still, the event is a perfect fit! The reading, Q&A, and book signing will begin at :30 p.m. in the St. Louis Park Rec Center Gallery Room, 3700 Monterrey Drive. The event is free and open to the public. Dessert will be provided. The Historical Annual Meeting will follow at 7:30 p.m.

Still is a nonfiction biography/memoir written by longtime St. Louis Park residents Rebecca Bender and her father Kenneth Bender.  It is a history of five generations, a family we meet first as they flee Odessa and last as they make their way as American Jews … and as Dakota farmers, as students and storekeepers, as soldiers and lawyers, and even as a teen in an international competition who stands face-to-face with Netanyahu.  Still was recently named the Winner of the 2019 Independent Press Award (Judaism category).

June 9, 2019: Rebecca Bender will be at the Wild Rose Cafe in Ashley, ND, at 2 p.m. for a reading from her recently published book Still. There will be a reading, followed by time for questions and book signing.  Light refreshments in the form of coffee, lemonade, and bars will be available.

June 6, 2019: Rebecca Bender has been invited by the Minnesota Historical Society to do a reading from Still at the Fort Snelling Visitor Center on June 6th, 2019, at 7 P.M., the 75th anniversary of D Day. Below is the description of the planned event provided by the author:

“Rebecca Bender co-wrote Still with her late dad, Silver Star and double Purple Heart recipient, Major Kenneth M. Bender, who trained as a private at Fort Snelling, beginning in November of 1940.  The book follows 5 generations of the Bender family, a Jewish family that fled Russia in 1905 and became North Dakota homesteading farmers, despite having never been allowed to own land in Russia and never even having ridden a horse. Rebecca’s June 6th reading from Still, (which was just released by North Dakota State University Press), will honor all the soldiers who fought in World War II, by focusing on her family’s 3rd generation in the United States.  She will read her dad’s detailed recollections of training as a private at Fort Snelling, (after being the first volunteer from McPherson County, South Dakota), Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, GA, training with the Second Infantry Division at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, Fort McCoy, WI and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, training in Ireland and Wales, being the Captain of Company B, 2nd Infantry Division, 38th Regiment, for the Normandy Invasion, (including during the infamous Battle for Hill 192) and his reflections after the war.

May 11-12, 2019: The Loft’s Wordplay, presented by St. Catherine University and the Star Tribune, is coming this May featuring Stephen King, Mitch Albom, Amy Tan, Dave Barry, Bill McKibben, Tommy Orange, Jared Diamond, and our very own Dawn Quigley! There will also be a Friday night author concert with the Rock Bottom Remainders at First Avenue. April 8, 2019: At the Douglas County Library in Alexandria, MN, you will find author of Sister Secrets Matthew Valan doing a reading and signing. The event is from 6-7:30 p.m., and is free and open to the public. Books will be available for purchase.

April 5, 2019: Thomas Isern will be the keynote speaker at the Ashley, ND annual banquet put on by the Ashley Chamber of Commerce. He will be speaking on the topic, “Heritage as Resource: Making the Most of Our German-Russian History.” Remarks on heritage sites in McIntosh County and a vision for grassroots heritage tourism in German-Russian Country. Some references to Pacing Dakota, and a look ahead a work in progress – Discovering German-Russian Country.

March 12, 2019: Rebecca will be in Aberdeen, SD as a guest of South Dakota Germans from Russian Cultural Center, invited by Robert Russell, librarian of Williams Library on Northern State University. She will give a presentation and answer questions afterwards.

March 11, 2019: In Pierre, SD, Rebecca Bender will be a guest speaker of South Dakota Historical Society Foundation with Lisa Bondy, the foundation’s Administrative Director. Rebecca plans a historical context explanation of Still and will read for attendees.

November 3, 2017: Bret Weber to speak about The Bakken: An Archaeology of an Industrial Landscape at the Western History Association Conference in San Diego.

Friday, November 3, 2017, at 8:30 a.m., Dr. Bret Weber will take part in the WHA Conference session, “Leisure and Living in Wide Open Western Suburban Spaces.” His presentation is called “A Tourist Guide to the Bakken Oil Patch.” He will be talking about our newest publication, released October 19. Copies of The Bakken will be on display in the Exhibitor’s Hall.

November 3, 2017: The Prairie Post Office Book Reading and Signing, Hague Cafe, hosted by the Emmons County Record, 3:00 p.m.

Some of North Dakota’s rural communities have lost, or on are on the verge of losing, their post offices. Why is this happening, and why have rural North Dakotans been fighting to save them? This presentation will respond to these questions while providing photos of rural post offices and the local residents who speak eloquently to the varied roles that post offices play in their communities. The public is invited to a book talk and signing with authors Steven Bolduc and Amy Phillips, Friday, November 3, at the Hague Cafe. The Hague Post Office is one of the featured sites in The Prairie Post Office: Enlarging the Common Life in Rural North Dakota.

Be sure to attend this first Ellendale Book Festival at the Ellendale Opera House, 1-4 p.m. Among guests will be Drs. William Caraher and Bret Weber, authors of The Bakken: An Archaeology of an Industrial Landscape; Gwen Hoberg, one of the authors of The Walk Across North Dakota; Dr. Tom Isern, author of the new introduction for William C. Sherman‘s Prairie Mosaic: An Ethnic Atlas of Rural North Dakota; and Dr. Suzzanne Kelley, editor in chief at North Dakota State University Press. Kelley will take on duties of emcee. The featured speaker is Alicia Underlee Nelson, author of Beer in North Dakota.

Sammi Jones, author of Derby Girl: A Memoir, will join other Minnesota authors–including Senator Al Franken and Heid Erdrich–who published books in the past year and are invited to participate in the Morning Mingle.
